Is art pointless?
I’ve been thinking a lot about how I have no idea if my art will ever be “useful.” I have a deep desire to glorify God through making things, specifically painting, pottery, and a peaceful home environment. But I have a lot of uncertainty around if and how God will use these things. This uncertainty can tempt me to believe the lie that my creativity is “pointless.”
But as we read in Ecclesiastes, everything is “hevel.” In other words, everything’s just a vapor and will disappear before we can get a good grasp on it. EXCEPT for the things that are done to fear God and keep his commands (Ecc. 12:13).
If I believe the Bible (and I do), then I have to speak Truth back to the lie that’s telling me art is pointless and I should just quit. Here’s how I’m doing that:
God, You created me and sent Your Son to be my Savior so that I can live for one purpose - to glorify and enjoy You forever.
Anything that I do with the goal of glorifying You in accordance with Your Word is eternally meaningful. Because of who You are, I have the freedom to pursue artistic growth even if I never make anything “good”, “useful”, or “beautiful.” You are The Creator and all beauty, goodness, and Truth comes from You alone. You don’t need anything from me.
I may never create beautiful, skillful art by the world’s standards. But if my attempts are from a heart that’s worshipful and dependent upon You, then my efforts are fruitful by Your standards. Please help me to pursue Your approval, not the world’s.
I know that I am a weak, broken vessel. But in Your infinite mercy and grace, that’s exactly the kind of vessel You use to glorify Yourself again and again. Second Corinthians 12:9 reminds me that my weakness is a great canvas to display Your strength. Thank You that I am chosen as Your daughter based not on my merit, but on Yours.
I pray that You will help me to wake up and live every day with a heart that whispers, “Jesu Juva.” For I can do nothing without You strengthening my hands for the work.
Lord, if it’s Your will, I would love nothing more than to glorify and honor You through making art. But if that’s not what You have for me, then please redirect my steps.
I thank You that creativity reminds me of Your faithfulness. Every word, every stroke of paint, every piece of pottery… I only have the strength and courage to attempt making anything because of Your strength and faithfulness. Thank You for choosing and pursuing me, even when I was Your enemy. But by Your grace I am what I am (1 Cor. 15:10). Amen.
Andrew Peterson says in Adorning the Dark, “If you’re called to speak light into the dark, believe this: the darkness wants to shut you up.” Friend, I pray this post encourages you to speak Light back to the darkness.
Lord, You are steadfast.
